Aachen Cathedral features an octagonal central chapel; this chapel was erected between 796 and 805 as the Palace of Aachen's chapel. Charlemagne initiated the construction of the Palatine Chapel around 796, alongside other palace structures. Odo of Metz is credited with the cathedral's construction.
