Acropolis of Athens, GR
And the Temple of Athena Nike
The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel perched on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece. It contains the remains of several ancient buildings, the most famous being the Parthenon. Pericles coordinated the construction of these structures, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Older Parthenon was built with 8,000 two-ton limestone blocks, supported by a foundation 11 meters deep at some points, with the rest filled with soil held in place by a retaining wall. The Parthenon and other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians when gunpowder stored in the Parthenon exploded.
