Alcatraz Island, US

Near the Golden Gate strait

Alcatraz Island is a small island located about 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco in San Francisco Bay, California, near the Golden Gate strait. In 1853, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began fortifying the island under the direction of Zealous B. Tower, a process that continued until 1858, when the initial version of Fort Alcatraz was complete. Studies of the island and its fortifications have included archaeological surveys that rely on contemporary technology, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data and georectifications. The United States Army began studying the suitability of Alcatraz Island for positioning coastal batteries to protect the approaches to San Francisco Bay.
