A palatine city, not a palace
Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, the first Nasrid emir, began it in 1238. Under the Nasrid Dynasty it was transformed into a palatine city — a city, not a palace — with its own irrigation system. When the Reconquista concluded in 1492 it became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella. Christopher Columbus was received there.
