Angkor, KH
Its central towers standing for Mount Meru
Jayavarman II declared himself a universal monarch and god-king in AD 802, and the Angkorian period is dated from that act. Angkor Wat went up between 1113 and 1150 under King Suryavarman II, its central towers standing for Mount Meru, its moat for the oceans beyond. Buildings outside the main complex were not made of stone. A Khmer rebellion against Siamese authority brought the Ayutthayan sack of 1431, and the population moved south to Longvek. A team using satellite photographs concluded in 2007 that the urban sprawl ran to at least 1,000 square kilometres.
