Paulinus destroyed the sacred groves
Gaius Suetonius Paulinus sent his amphibious Batavian contingent over as a surprise vanguard, then destroyed the shrine on Anglesey and the nemeta, the sacred groves. The road that now runs from Holyhead to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll was originally a Roman road. The House of Aberffraw, which kept courts at Aberffraw and Rhosyr, ruled the Kingdom of Gwynedd until 1283; after the Conquest of Wales by Edward I, Beaumaris Castle went up on the south-eastern corner of the island. Thomas Telford designed the Menai Suspension Bridge in 1826. The island covers 261 square miles, the largest in Wales and in the Irish Sea, and 57.2% of the county speaks Welsh.
