Founded a settlement near the Kadamba River

Anuradhapura is a major city in the north central plain of Sri Lanka, serving as the capital of the North Central Province and Anuradhapura District. It was formally established as the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom in 377 BCE under King Pandukabhaya. Anuradha, a minister in Prince Vijaya's court, founded a settlement near the Kadamba River, which later became Anuradhapura. King Pandukabhaya planned the city with gates and quarters for traders, covering an area of one square kilometre. The settlement was strategically located on irrigable, fertile land, surrounded by dense jungle for natural defense. Near major ports northwest and northeast of the island.
