Assur, IQ
Located in Iraq
Qal'at Sherqat, located in Iraq, was the capital of the Middle Assyrian Empire and later the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 911 to 609 BC. The Ishtar temple at Assur dates back to the Early Dynastic period, with radiocarbon evidence placing its earliest levels around 2896–2702 BC. Shamshi-Adad I, an Amorite ruler, conquered Assur in 1808–1775 BC and established it as his religious capital. In 2024, archaeological investigations revealed that the temple's foundation rests on a thick layer of pure sand, a construction practice typical in Southern Mesopotamia but uncommon in later Assur temples.
