Axum is the historic capital of the Aksumite Empire. Excavations at Amba 'Beta Giyorgis above Aksum reveal a settlement dating back to the 7th to 4th centuries B.C., validating pre-Aksumite roots. Aksumite architecture features massive dressed granite blocks, smaller uncut stones for walling, mud mortar to fix them, bricks for vaulting and arches, and an external wooden framework with 'monkey-heads' or square corner extrusions.
