Until the 1980s
Route 7, the Carretera Austral, was constructed in the 1980s to connect the north and south of the Aysén Region. Until the 1980s, the only overland routes through the region were extremely primitive tracks. The Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, often shortened to Aysén Region or Aisén, is one of Chile's 16 regions.
