Baalbek, LB

About 67 km northeast of Beirut

Baalbek is a city located east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about 67 km northeast of Beirut. The present Temple of Jupiter presumably replaced an earlier one using the same foundation; it was constructed during the mid-1st century and probably completed around AD 60. The settlers of the Roman colony Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Heliopolitana may have arrived as early as the time of Caesar. However, they were more probably the veterans of the 5th and 8th Legions under Augustus. In 2024, during the Israel–Hezbollah conflict, Israel sent forced displacement calls for the entire city.
