A small town on a clay tablet
It starts as a small town on a clay tablet, in the reign of Shar-Kali-Sharri, between 2217 and 2193 BC. The Amorite king Hammurabi made it a major city in the 18th century BC. Most of it was mud brick until Nebuchadnezzar II. Then it passed from one empire to the next: Achaemenid, then Seleucid, Parthian, Roman, Sassanid, and finally Muslim rule.
