Bad Ems, DE
That mining continued throughout the Middle Ages
The Romans built a castrum here as part of the Upper Germanic Limes, and they were already digging for ores by open cast mining. That mining continued throughout the Middle Ages. The town was first mentioned in official documents in 880, and by the 17th and 18th centuries it was one of Germany's most famous bathing resorts. Since 1996 the mine has been set up as a museum.
