Badshahi Mosque, PK
Built to commemorate a campaign
Aurangzeb commissioned it to commemorate his military campaigns in southern India, in particular against the Maratha. His foster brother Muzaffar Hussein, governor of Lahore, oversaw the construction. The plan follows Shah Jahan's choice for the Jama Masjid in Delhi. In 1849 the British seized Lahore from the Sikh Empire, and under the British Raj the mosque and the adjoining fort were put to other uses.
