Balkh is a city in northern Afghanistan with an estimated population of 148,972 people. Archaeological remains dating to the Early Iron Age (c. 1500–1000 BC) were discovered by French archaeologists in the Bala Hissar citadel. The city has historically served as a center of Zoroastrianism and Buddhism, and it was once the capital of Bactria and later Tokharistan.
