Basel is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine, at the transition from the High Rhine to the Upper Rhine. Basilia is first named by the Ammianus Marcellinus in his Res Gestae as part of the Roman military fortifications along the Rhine in the late 4th century. The Roman Senator Munatius Plancus is known as the traditional founder of Basel since the Renaissance. Basel was destroyed by the Magyars in 917.
