Have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000

Bellinzona is the capital of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The three castles—Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro—have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000. A long wall, the Murata, was built across the Tessin valley to protect and tax the trade route over the St. Gotthard Pass. The fort was constructed in the late 1st century BC during the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus.
