In 1557, a forest charter was issued

Białowieża Forest is a large forest complex straddling the border between Poland and Belarus; Władysław II Jagiełło established a white wooden hunting manor in the village of Białowieża. In 1557, a forest charter was issued, creating a special board to manage its usage. By the end of the 18th century, the forest was divided into triangular areas called straże, with 13 such areas centered in Białowieża.
