Brasília, BR
And Joaquim Cardozo
Brasília is a city in Brazil. It was founded by President Juscelino Kubitschek on April 21, 1960, to replace Rio de Janeiro as the national capital and to be more centrally located. The city's urban design was planned by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, and Joaquim Cardozo. The communal apartment blocks were based on Le Corbusier's Ville Radieuse from 1935, and the superblocks followed the North American Radburn layout from 1929. Brasília was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning.
