Castle of pottery jars
The name is Arabic: qalʿat al-jirār, castle of pottery jars. Arabs did build a castle here in the Middle Age, but the jars are the part that stuck — the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, begun in 1608, runs 142 steps, and every step carries different hand-decorated ceramics. On 14 July 1943, in the hamlet of Santo Pietro, the Biscari Massacre took place.
