Capernaum was a fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was established in the 2nd century BC during the Hasmonean period and remained until the 11th century. The settlement extended along the northwestern shore of the lake without a defensive wall. Its structures were built with coarse basalt blocks, stone. Mud, lacking mortar and dressed stones, except for thresholds. Fishing was a primary economic activity, evidenced by the discovery of an ancient harbor west of the modern one constructed by the Franciscans.
