Casablanca, MA
Ranking third in North Africa
Casablanca is the most populous city in the Maghreb and ninth-largest in the Arab world. Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah rebuilt the town between 1756 and 1790 to fortify defenses between Rabat and Mazagan; he constructed the port during that same period. A narrow-gauge track was laid in June 1907 to connect the port to a quarry in Roches Noires. The port’s breakwater used a Decauville locomotive for transport. Casablanca is one of Africa’s largest artificial ports, ranking third in North Africa. The town was rebuilt to preempt a Christian attack or return.
