Catania is the second-largest city in the autonomous island region of Sicily in Italy, after Palermo, both by area and by population. The city was founded around 729 BC when the ancient village of Katane was occupied by Chalcidian Greek settlers from nearby Naxos. These Chalcidian Greeks also founded the city in the 8th century BC within Magna Graecia. The city's central old town features exuberant late-baroque architecture constructed following the 1693 earthquake. This central area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
