The Cave of Altamira is a cave complex near Santillana del Mar, Cantabria, Spain, featuring prehistoric cave art. It contains charcoal drawings and polychrome paintings of local fauna and human hands. Artists used charcoal and ochre or hematite, diluting pigments for varied intensity and creating chiaroscuro effects by using the cave's natural contours. A replica cave and museum, completed in 2001, reproduces the cave and its art, allowing comfortable viewing of the main hall's polychrome paintings and selected minor works.
