Charleston, US

On March 24, 1663

King Charles II granted the chartered Province of Carolina to eight of his loyal friends, the Lords Proprietors, on March 24, 1663. In 1670 Governor William Sayle arranged several shiploads of settlers from Bermuda and Barbados, who established Charles Town at Albemarle Point, its settlement to follow the Grand Model that John Locke prepared for the Proprietors. The town was moved in 1680, and by the 1690s it was the fifth-largest city in North America. Local merchants, Joseph Wragg among them, helped break the monopoly of the Royal African Company, and almost one-half of enslaved people imported to the United States arrived in Charleston. The city formally apologized in 2018.
