Chersonesus, contracted in medieval Greek to Cherson, was an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2,500 years ago in the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula. Settlers from Heraclea Pontica in Bithynia established the colony in the 6th century BC. In 2013 UNESCO listed Chersonesus as a World Heritage Site. The defensive wall was approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 3.5 to 4 metres wide and 8 to 10 metres high with towers at a height of 10 to 12 metres. Towers at a height of 10 to 12 metres were part of the defensive wall structure.
