The Maya built it in the Terminal Classic
The Maya built it in the Terminal Classic. The earliest hieroglyphic date found there is 832 AD; the last known one was recorded in the Osario temple. Where the city grew, and how far, was governed by something unglamorous — the hydrogeochemistry of the northern Yucatán, which is to say where the water was.
