Attracting an average of 6 million visitors annually
Cologne Cathedral is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 6 million visitors annually. Construction began in 1248 but was halted around 1560. Efforts to complete the cathedral restarted in 1814, yet proper funding only came in the 1840s. The edifice was finished to its original medieval plan in 1880. Medieval builders designed a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and serve as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor.
