Vespasian began it around 72 AD

Vespasian began it around 72 AD and his son Titus finished it in 80. It went up on the drained lake of Nero's private palace — a deliberate gesture, giving back to the public the ground an emperor had taken for himself. It stopped being used for entertainment in the early medieval period and was reused: workshops, housing, a fortress, a quarry.
