Mount Damavand is a dormant stratovolcano in Iran

Mount Damavand is a dormant stratovolcano in Iran. Its current edifice began forming approximately 600,000 years ago. Seismic wave patterns from nearby earthquakes suggest a magma chamber lies between 2 and 5 kilometres beneath its surface. In Zoroastrian mythology, the three-headed dragon Aži Dahāka was bound within Mount Damavand, destined to remain there until the world's end.
