Dasht-e Lut is a desert featuring extensive salt flats and dunes in Iran's Kerman and Sistan- Baluchestan provinces. The area was home to the Jiroft culture around 2500 BC. Over half of the desert's surface is composed of volcanic rocks. Recently, an archaeological survey on the eastern flank of the Kerman range and near the western edges of Dasht-e Lut uncovered eighty-seven ancient sites spanning from the fifth millennium BC to the late Islamic era.
