Djerba, TN
In the 12th century BC
In the 12th century BC, the Phoenicians from Tyre and Sidon settled Djerba, introducing olive trees and the industry of olive pressing. The island, known as Lytos or Meninx to the Ancient Greeks, was speculated to be the island of the lotus-eaters where Odysseus was stranded. By the fifth century AD, the Vandals, led by King Gaiseric, conquered Djerba after emigrating to the Maghreb in 429 AD. In 2023, Djerba was officially designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting its long and unique history. The island's population grew from 139,544 in 2004 to 163,726 in 2014.
