Construction started on January 28, 1887, and finished March 31, 1889. Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier designed the structure. It was meant as a centerpiece for the 1889 Exposition Universelle; Eiffel presented plans to the Société des Ingénieurs Civils. The tower was named a monument historique in 1964. It joined the Paris, Banks of the Seine UNESCO site in 1991.
