Alongside the nearby Ajanta Caves
The Ellora Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Aurangabad, India, and comprise one of the largest rock-cut cave complexes globally, featuring artwork from AD 600 to 1000, including Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain caves. The site has been dated through comparisons with other Deccan region cave temples, textual records, and epigraphical evidence, revealing three significant building periods: an early Buddhist phase (~600 to 730 CE), followed by Hindu and Jain phases (~730 to 950 CE). Today, the Ellora Caves, alongside the nearby Ajanta Caves, attract many tourists in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
