Fatehpur Sikri, IN
The city Akbar built and left
Jahangir was born in the village of Sikri to Mariam-uz-Zamani in 1569, and that year Akbar began a religious compound to commemorate Sheikh Salim Chishti, who had predicted the birth. After Jahangir's second birthday he began a walled city and imperial palace, which came to be known as Fatehpur Sikri, the 'City of Victory', after his Gujarat campaign of 1573. It was the Mughal capital from 1571 to 1585, when Akbar abandoned it for a campaign in Punjab. An Archaeological Survey of India excavation from 1999 to 2000 found that housing, temples and commercial centres stood here before Akbar built his capital. The town was completely abandoned in 1610.
