Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, situated 191 nautical miles off the Brazilian coast. It was discovered on August 10, 1503, by a Portuguese expedition led by captain Gonçalo Coelho, organized and financed by the Lisbon merchant Fernão de Loronha. In 2001, UNESCO designated the islands as a World Heritage Site due to their significance as a feeding ground for tuna, sharks, sea turtles, and marine mammals.
