Florence Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower, is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Florence in Florence, Italy. The dome was erected between 1420 and 1436, marking the first time an octagonal dome was built without a temporary wooden supporting frame. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Eugene IV on 25 March 1436. The exterior, initially begun in the 14th century by Arnolfo di Cambio, remained unfinished until Emilio De Fabris' polychrome marble façade was installed in 1887.
