Fribourg, CH
In 1157, Berthold IV
Fribourg is a historic town in Switzerland. In 1157, Berthold IV, Duke of Zähringen, founded the town as Freiburg. Rapid development led to its first expansion: the Burg district expanded westward in 1224, a town was established across the river in 1254, and development began near Place Python in 1280. The town's defensible position aided the Dukes of Zähringen in strengthening and extending their power across the Swiss plateau between the Aare and La Sarine rivers. Fribourg joined the Swiss Confederation in 1481 and has long influenced Swiss and European Catholicism.
