Geneva lies at 46°12' North
Geneva lies at 46°12' North, 6°09' East, where the Rhône flows out to the south-western end of Lake Geneva. In 121 BC, the Roman Republic took Geneva, an Allobrogian border town fortified against the Helvetii; it had been defended against the Helvetii when the Romans captured it. The city is the most populous in French-speaking Romandy and second-most populous in Switzerland. In 1798, Revolutionary France under the Directory annexed Geneva. France lost the city, and Geneva recovered independence after the Napoleonic Wars.
