Lifting the ground 5,000 to 10,000 feet
The Colorado Plateau began rising about 65 million years ago in the Laramide orogeny, lifting the ground 5,000 to 10,000 feet. The canyon was not cut all at once: the Hurricane segment formed 50 to 70 million years ago, and the Eastern Grand Canyon only 15 to 25 million. The Pueblo people held it a holy site and came here on pilgrimage.
