The Great Barrier Reef spans over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 miles) across approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 square miles), comprising over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. It is composed of billions of coral polyps. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 requires an Outlook Report on the reef's health every five years, with the most recent publication in 2019.
