Heard Island and McDonald Islands are an Australian external territory located in the southern Indian Ocean. The first confirmed sighting of Heard Island occurred in 1853 by American captain John Heard aboard the ship Oriental. In 2002, the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve was established, becoming the world's largest marine protected area at that time.
