K'gari, AU

Told by Butchulla elder Olga Miller

K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is a World Heritage-listed sand island located on the south-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, within the Wide Bay–Burnett region. The island has been inhabited by the Butchulla people for between 5,000 and 50,000 years. According to the K'gari creation story, told by Butchulla elder Olga Miller, Yendingie descended from the sky to create the sea and then the land. Yendingie transformed her into a beautiful island, creating trees, flowers, and mirrored lakes for her to gaze into the sky, along with creeks, birds, animals, and people to keep her company.
