The Kerguelen Islands were discovered by French navigator Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec on February 12, 1772. The French government later granted the Bossière brothers a 50-year lease to establish a sheep-farming colony on the islands. In January 2007, an archaeological excavation took place at Observatory Bay, where the German Antarctic Expedition had previously set up an observation station in 1902–1903.
