Komodo National Park is located in Indonesia. It was founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard. In 1984, the park expanded to include a marine area covering 60% of its total area, extending to 219,322 hectares (541,960 acres). The park was initially established to conserve the unique Komodo dragon, first discovered in 1912 by Lieutenant J. K. H. van Steyn van Hensbroek. In 1991, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve, recognized as one of the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots by Conservation International.
