The Hospitallers rebuilt the castle in the 1140s
Krak des Chevaliers is a historic castle. Kurdish troops first inhabited the site in the 11th century under the Mirdasids. The Hospitallers rebuilt the castle in the 1140s, completing it by 1170, when an earthquake caused damage. A second building phase in the 13th century transformed Krak des Chevaliers into a concentric castle, establishing its outer wall and current appearance. Since 2006, the castles of Krak des Chevaliers and Qal'at Salah El-Din have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
