Lake Baikal is a rift lake and the deepest lake in the world. It is the world's oldest lake, aged 25–30 million years. The lake lies in a rift valley formed by the Baikal Rift Zone, where the Earth's crust is slowly pulling apart. Situated in southern Siberia, Russia, it is bordered by Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Republic of Buryatia to the southeast. Lake Baikal is the only confined freshwater lake known to contain both direct and indirect evidence of gas hydrates.
