The General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge spans 8,678 metres (5.4 miles) across Lake Maracaibo, linking Maracaibo and Santa Rita and was completed in 1962. Lake Maracaibo, covering 13,512 km², is situated between the states of Zulia, Trujillo, and Mérida in northwestern Venezuela. Formed 36 million years ago during the Eocene, the lake's brackish waters are fed by the Catatumbo River and are connected to the Gulf of Venezuela via a narrow strait.
