Lake Tanganyika, ZM

Since the 1990s

Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake. It began to form 9–12 million years ago, with the northern section emerging 7–8 million years ago and the southern section 2–4 million years ago. The lake lies within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, and is surrounded by mountainous valley walls. Since the 1990s, the water level in Lake Tanganyika has risen by about 2 meters, flooding homes and structures along its low-lying shores.
