Focusing on the Shaft

Lascaux is a network of caves near the village of Montignac in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France. The age of the paintings is now usually estimated at 17,000 to 22,000 years; the cave complex was opened to the public on 14 July 1948. Initial archaeological investigations began a year later, focusing on the Shaft. The original caves have been closed to the public since 1963. Their condition was quickly deteriorating, so they were shut down. There are now a number of replicas available for visitors.
